UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman met Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho on the second day of the rare UN visit to North Korea - the first since 2010.

The North's Korean Central News Agency said Wednesday the two officials had "exchanged views on areas of common interest regarding United Nations agencies in cooperating with North Korea".

North Korean officials rarely brief the media on the content of discussions with foreign dignitaries. Feltman arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday for a four-day visit, Yonhap reported.

The spokesman said that the political chief would address "issues of mutual interest and concern" with North Korean officials, leading to anticipation that the visit could defuse geopolitical tensions. "He's not traveling on behalf of the US government and he's not traveling -I want to make this clear - with any kind of message from the USA government".

The visit by Feltman, an American citizen and former State Department official, comes just after Pyongyang's launch of its most advanced missile to date.
