Dozens of firefighters are responding to a fire at a high-rise building above Grand Central terminal - with smoke causing the station to be evacuated.

FDNY says a call came in for a fire at the Graybar Building just before 9:30 a.m.

An electrical fire broke out in a supply closet on the mezzanine level of Grand Central Terminal with heavy smoke being detected inside the building, which forced an evacuation.

The FDNY confirmed the fire had been extinguished shortly before 11am, however the smoke could not be contained and the station has been evacuated as a result.

Three people were overcome by smoke and treated at the scene.

The cause of the fires remains unclear and at the moment don't appear to be related.

Across town on the west side of the city, firefighters rushed to put out a track fire at Penn Station, underneath Madison Square Garden arena. It was under control within about half an hour. Amtrak said it was usin exhaust fans to ventilate the area.
