This is our last big push to collect toys for the angels on our Angel Tree that have not been adopted or returned so please stop by and purchase a gift for a child in need.

Representatives from both organizations said that they wanted to address the needs of the community as well as those overseas.

A shortage of Angel Tree adoptions led to a desperate plea Thursday from The Salvation Army.

"We've never had this problem before", said Beverly Gilmore, coordinator for the Christmas Store.

Volunteers are needed 10 8 p.m. daily through December 23 at locations around Northeast Florida. The organization helps more than 4.5 million people during the holidays.

"We see what the Salvation Army does for the community and we wanted to do our part to help", Downing said. Sponsors receive a wish list from the family they adopt, and gifts can be dropped off at Gene Butman Ford, 510 N. Hewitt Road, Ypsilanti, on December 18 and 19.

Downing said a collection box has been set up at 1050 Delaware Ave.; toys can be dropped off there until December 16.

Salvation Army officials have run the Christmas store at least 42 seasons. For the 12th straight year, Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland will serve as the Honorary Chairman of the 2017 Red Kettle Campaign. Homelessness is devastating. People die on the streets every year.

"We chose to not have all that this year, instead we are focused on raising donations", Bracy said.
