Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk received a one-game suspension from the National Hockey League for unsportsmanlike conduct during Wednesday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He'll miss the Flames' game in Montreal on Thursday night. Tkachuk, a Flames forward standing at the bench, reached over the boards and into the pile of bodies and thrusted his stick at Martin.

Tkachuk's jab went undetected by on-ice officials and no penalty was called on the play.

Tkachuk was already considered a repeat offender after receiving a two-game suspension for elbowing L.A. Kings defenseman Drew Doughty previous year in his rookie season.

Andersen stopped a season-high 47 shots through regulation and overtime, and three more in the shootout as Toronto beat Calgary 2-1 on Wednesday for its second win over the Flames in eight days.

Tkachuk was suspended one game last month for tapping the leg of Detroit Red Wings defenceman Luke Witkowski as he headed to the locker room after a fight, sparking a brawl between the two teams.

Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock knows goaltender Frederik Andersen was the difference between two points or a home loss against the Calgary Flames. "He'll learn over time but you gotta give Tkachuk credit he played a good game, he played hard".

"I thought it was a good hockey game, I look at how our team played start to finish I like our game", said Flames coach Glen Gulutzan. "No reason for that stuff". Martin said post-game that he didn't feel it and was told about the play by a staff.

"Second time, I guess, over the last little while I have seen him do something like that where, like I said, if you're going to do it, you might as well make it count and try to hurt somebody if you're going to do something stupid", Martin said.

TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button said he believes Tkachuk's spear on Wednesday night is worthy of another one-game suspension. "When you're sitting on the bench or the situation in Detroit.it's not really necessary".
