A tank and an aircraft targeted two military posts in the Gaza Strip, following projectiles that was sacked from the northern Gaza Strip and exploded in southern Israel, according to a statement made by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Thursday evening.

The Spokesperson's Unit also confirmed a third rocket that was sacked toward Israel and reached Israeli territory.

"In response to that fire and the projectiles fired at Israel throughout the day that fell short in Gaza, an IDF tank and an [Israel Air Force] aircraft targeted two terror posts in Gaza", the military said in a statement.

Earlier, photographs from Gaza had shown the military lighting up parts of the territory with flares.

Twenty Palestinians from the village of Qusra in Samaria were arrested by Israeli security forces Wednesday night in connection with an attack on a group of Jewish children who were hiking in the area last week.

This latest report from the region comes after U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Later in the evening another launch was reported with rockets said to have fallen in open fields in Israeli territory. The IDF confirmed the use of a tank and an IAF to strike Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. The protesters also clashed with Israeli security forces firing tear gas and stun grenades, as well as rubber bullets and live ammunition.

Reportedly, the leader of the Palestinian Islamist group, Hamas, has called for a new "intifada", or uprising, as protests broke out in Jerusalem, Ramallah and Bethlehem.
