Hope Solo announced she's running for president of the U.S. Soccer Federation in an essay posted to Facebook on Friday.

In the essay she described how her upbringing shaped her impression of U.S. Soccer.

After the USWNT's failure at the 2016 Summer Olympics, Solo called Sweden's team "cowards" and was then terminated, and she has been quiet for her standards since then.

"We need passionate and intelligent soccer people leading the way at U.S Soccer", she wrote. The former star goalkeeper has announced that she is running for U.S. Soccer president.

Solo listed the four core principles she will be campaigning on: Creating a winning culture; equality and women's issues; youth and diversity at all levels; USSF organizational, operational and financial governance transparency. Solo discussed how being a lower-middle class family was taxing on her soccer dreams because of the cost to play youth soccer. "We now must refocus our goals and come together as a soccer community to bring about the changes we desire".

Solo, the most decorated soccer player in U.S. women's history who holds national records for appearances, starts, wins and shutouts, said she has been traveling the world during her year away from playing, meeting with foreign soccer teams and associations and developing a better feel for what it takes to be a leader.

Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl reported that Solo has the three official nominations needed by Tuesday to become an official candidate, meaning she will be in the race for full two months. She's as big a long shot as you will find to replace Sunil Gulati in February.
