Al Franken, D-Minn., and U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz. But it resurfaced as a heightened awareness of sexual harassment has swept workplaces across the country, including USA congressional offices.

Greene alleges Farenthold sexually harassed her and created an overall hostile work environment. But while we're glad to see he's paying the money back, we note his record in this affair is deeply troubling.

The ethics panel ruled that the information Nunes disclosed was not considered classified and would close the investigation into the allegations against the chairman.

The independent Office of Congressional Ethics investigated Greene's claim, and recommended that the House Ethics Committee dismiss the allegations, "as there is not substantial reason to believe that Representative Farenthold sexually harassed or discriminated against complainant".

In 2015, Farenthold, who was first elected to Congress in 2010, reached a settlement with Greene regarding an allegation filed in federal court.

Greene, appearing on CNN Monday night, said she welcomed more transparency in her case, even though she said it has set her back in her career and made it hard for her to find work.

While the committee's statement did not name her, a lawyer for Farenthold's former staffer confirmed her identity last week.

The committee would like to obtain testimony from Lauren Greene, the former aide who brought the suit in 2014 after being fired by Farenthold.

The formation of the subcommittee raises the level of the review and is a necessary prerequisite to the most serious sanctions available in ethics matters.

"Once all the facts are released, I'm confident this matter will once and for all be settled and resolved", Farenthold said.

The case came to light again this week when Farenthold acknowledged that the settlement was paid out from taxpayers funds, which he agreed to repay. "This investigation increases the transparency the public deserves and what I've wanted since the beginning".
