No evacuation orders were officially in place, however residents should be prepared to get out quickly, Stewart said.

The out-of-control fires are blazing in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and almost 200,000 people have been affected by mandatory evacuation orders.

LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas said red flag conditions are expected to remain in effect through the rest of the week, with gusting Santa Ana winds presenting a continuing danger of rapidly spreading blazes. According to its website, the museum was closed on December 5 and December 6 "to protect the collections from smoke from fires in the region", but as of now, the art inside is staying put.

Los Angeles commuters had one hell of a drive to work Wednesday morning as a wildfire swept through the Bel-Air district, forcing the closure of at least one stretch of a major freeway.

Some 775 firefighters were on the scene battling the Rye fire Wednesday afternoon.

Of the blazes that had already been burning, the largest and most active was the Thomas fire that burned more than 150 structures earlier this week, was marching along the coastline north of the city of Ventura.

The fire threatened homes toward the top of the hill on the east side of the freeway. Fears that Edison could be blamed for this week's fires drove shares of its parent company, Edison International, down 13 percent Monday.

Police knocked on doors and used loudspeakers to make sure everybody had left their homes.

However, mandatory evacuations in the area have been lifted.

Among those evacuated was model Chrissy Teigen, wife of singer John Legend. "Lord 'Be still, '" one Twitter user wrote.

"We have a very sophisticated filtration system that was built into the Getty and it literally reverses the flow of air", Hartwig said.

This has been California's deadliest year ever for wildfires. The Thomas Fire is more than three times the size of the Tubbs Fire (36,807 acres), which was the most destructive of the fires in Napa and Sonoma counties back in October.
