The economic realities of the food business (meaning, it's more expensive to make everything) eventually led to its demise, but hope springs eternal, and that hope got a boost a few months ago when reports suggested the fast food giant was looking at bringing something like the Dollar Menu back to its restaurants.

Offering cheap eats has become a winning strategy for the world's largest hamburger chain, and a way to fight off other low-cost chains.

"The "$1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu" will become a permanent part of the McDonald's nationwide menu starting January 4, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said.

"Introducing the "(Not) New $1 Menu". It tested other names, but customers liked the Dollar Menu one best, said Chris Kempczinski, who oversees McDonald's Corp.'s USA business. "We are (and always have been) completely committed to coming up with the most craveable, creative menu items that set the bar for what great food at a great value should be".

"It's something that still resonates", he said.

There are a dozen items, including cheeseburgers for a buck, a bacon McDouble for $2 and a happy meal for $3.
