Global content studio Pulse Films has acquired the rights to author Lizzy Goodman's book Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock & Roll in NYC 2001-2011.

The series, expected to be an hour per installment, will combine first-hand testimony and archive footage of numerous seminal bands during the period, namely The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, Interpol and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Filmmakers promise to dispense with the "expected tropes and conventions of music documentaries" in order to "create a work of true cinematic scale that will redefine the scope of the music documentary form".

Directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern, who previously helmed the LCD Soundsystem concert film, Shut Up and Play the Hits, the documentary will feature "first hand testimony, rare archive, and an era-defining soundtrack" with numerous sources featured in the book, according to Pitchfork.

Lizzy Goodman has been retained to executive produce the series, and seemed delighted by the prospect of furthering the project. Jaime Neely will produce, while Will Lovelace & Dylan Southern are attached to direct.

"Lizzy's book captures a moment and a feeling in a way that is immediate, visceral and evocative, and those are the qualities we want to bring to the screen", the pair said in a statement.

Meet Me in the Bathroom, the book, was released this past May. "It's time to share with everyone else the full view of this weird, beautiful, dirty time capsule I've been inhabiting", she said.

Pulse Films' previous music-related productions include Nick Cave's One More Time with Feeling, Take That's Look Back, Don't Stare, Arcade Fire's The Reflektor Tapes and Beyonce's Peabody Award-winning Lemonade.

With 9/11 as a backdrop, the documentary series is billed as a story about the transformation of the city in the first decade of the 2000s as seen through the prism of the bands coming through at the time.

"Meet Me in the Bathroom is a brilliant property that we are thrilled to be bringing to life in this ambitious way".
