Morocco: Dubai International Film Festival Opens With Morocco's Participation

This time around, it was the Christian Bale-starring period Western Hostiles that raised the curtain on the 14th edition of the Dubai International Film Festival, once again taking place at its traditional hub at the beachside Madinat Jumeirah. This Lebanese designer redefined the idea of a fairytale wedding gown... The fourth award was presented to two-time Oscar victor Cate Blanchett is an internationally acclaimed Australian actress and theatre director with a long and illustrious career and has featured in an array of successful and critically acclaimed films.

The Australian actress and theatre director was presented her gong by DIFF chairman Abdulhamid Juma and HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed al Maktoum. "We are excited to welcome over 59 regional films to the Festival this year, each making sure that voices from this part of the world are heard".

The Carol star also added it was "ladies first tonight ... which is a good motto for the film industry", according to the Hollywood Reporter.

DIFF's Opening Ceremony recognized those whose work has made a lasting mark on the industry with Awards that recognized achievements for outstanding contributions to cinema.

"Not only Hollywood, but Europe and the outside world is in turmoil at the moment, and I believe that cinema has a role to play in bringing it to an end", he said. "Cinema can take this opportunity and move all of us forward".

The four recipients at this year's Festival are renowned Egyptian writer Wahid Hamed, for his prolific and impactful influence on cinema that will resonate for generations to come; legendary talent of stage and screen Sir Patrick Stewart, for a decades-long career of iconic cinema, celebrated Indian actor Irrfan Khan, whose unique character work has made waves across Indian and global screens and internationally acclaimed Australian actress and two-time Oscar victor Cate Blanchett.

Among the schedule of films are some 140 titles from 51 countries, with 18 gala screenings, including of global festival hits such as The Shape of Water, Downsizing, The Disaster Artist, The Death of Stalin, The Square and On Chesil Beach.
