De Leon says Democrats are unanimously supporting San Diego Democrat Toni Atkins to replace him as Senate President Pro Tem.

Interestingly, in the wake of sexual harassment issues among legislators continuing to make the national headlines the California Senate has announced it will be electing its first female President Pro Tempore.

Atkins, who went from San Diego City Council to Assembly speaker to the Senate, will succeed Sen. There will be a formal vote on leadership in early January before a transition next year when he will be forced from the Senate by term limits, he said. Dianne Feinstein, D-California.

"Toni is a leader of great experience, achievement and integrity, and I have every confidence that she will lead America's most accomplished legislative chamber to even greater heights", he said. "I intend to earn that trust every day by working tirelessly and inclusively to keep California a place of opportunity for everyone".

If De León's statement holds true, it will be the second time that Atkins, 55, of South Park, has been the leader of one of the chambers in Sacramento. She's also a co-author of the single-payer health care bill that passed the Senate previous year before stalling in the Assembly.
