Undisputed divisional champion Conor McGregor hasn't defended his title since winning it via second-round knockout against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016, instead electing to chase and eventually land an August 2017 boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

With no fights signed or looming at the moment, the interim lightweight champion had made a decision to undergo elbow surgery.

The UFC Interim Lightweight Champion has a professional MMA record of 23-3-0, with notable wins over Joe Schilling, Brock Jardine, Ramsey Nijem, Yves Edwards, Danny Castillo, Abel Trujillo, Gleison Tibau, Josh Thomson, Edson Barboza, Rafael Dos Anjos and the aforementioned Kevin Lee. Although company president Dana White had been targeting UFC 219 on December 30 for that bout, negotiations to get McGregor back in the Octagon have not gone as smoothly as he had anticipated.

There's also Nate Diaz, who'll likely only return for a trilogy bout with McGregor. In the meantime, Ferguson has opted for elbow surgery.

Ferguson's wife, Cristina. revealed the news through her private Instagram account. "Praying for a speedy recovery". If the Irishman's negotiations continue to go South, Ferguson might have to consider a bout against the victor of Nurmagomedov vs. Barboza.
