Three people were killed and 15 others were injured when gunfire erupted early Thursday at a New Mexico high school, according to media reports.

The shooting incident happened around 8 a.m. Thursday at Aztec High School in Aztec, officials said, and the students were in class at the time.

"No other injuries reported", the police said.

State and federal authorities are investigating what led to the shooting and did not immediately release any details about the circumstances.

The shooting took place a week before the fifth anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the deadliest school shooting in US history. But it started getting closer and louder and it was obvious it was gunshots.

The teacher had locked the door as he normally does and the students hid in a corner of the room.

Parker said it felt like a dream.

KOB-TV reported that the alleged shooter is also dead, but said it was unclear whether the shooter was included in the reported fatalities.

A crowd of nervous parents gathered outside City Hall in the moments after the shooting to wait for more information as officers tried to reassure them about the safety of their children.

Aztec is a rural community of 6,500 people in the heart of northwestern New Mexico's oil and gas country and near the Navajo Nation.

Residents voiced disbelief on social media, while members of the New Mexico congressional delegation, state Attorney General Hector Balderas and other elected officials offered their condolences and other assistance. Its main street is lined by old brick buildings that date back more than a century.

"While details are still coming in, we grieve for the innocent victims in this senseless act of violence". Ben Ray Lujan said in a tweet.
