We definitely didn't see THAT one coming.

The rest of this post contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead mid-season 8 finale.

Sunday's super-sized The Walking Dead midseason finale closed the book on season eight for the year with one of its biggest episodes ever. In the closing moments of the episode, it's revealed that Carl suffered a zombie bite at some point during his efforts to distract the saviors - and, as producer Scott Gimple has confirmed, the bite isn't going to be treated differently from other bites. He was bit trying to save everyone, including newcomer Siddiq, and we don't find out until the very end of the episode when he tells Rick. Carl's fate is sealed.

For those of you unfamiliar with the comics, this is a huge departure from the storyline Robert Kirkman created.

For his part, Riggs tells The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview that showrunner Scott M. Gimple informed him in June that Carl was being killed off. Riggs' final episode will be the February 25 season eight midseason premiere in which Carl will take his final breaths as the show enters unprecedented territory as the character - in the comics and now formerly on the show - was considered Rick's heir apparent and the future of the new world.

Rick (Andrew Lincoln) managed to get out of his latest precarious situation with the Scavengers on the most recent episode of The Walking Dead. Comment below, let us know.
