Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has sustained minor injuries after being involved in a fight in prison‚ the Department of Correctional Services said on Tuesday.

The former Paralympic athlete is now serving a 13-year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

"It is alleged that he was involved in an altercation with another inmate over the use of a public phone in the special care unit‚ where both offenders are detained at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre‚" said department spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo.

The South African sprinter underwent a medical exam and an investigation has been launched.

Oscar Pistorius has been injured in a prison brawl, after arguing with another inmate while queuing to use a phone.Prison bosses also say that he faces losing his privileges if he is found to have started it.

He claimed he thought Ms Steenkamp was an intruder when he shot her four times though a toilet door at his home in Pretoria.

The London 2012 gold medal victor claimed he had mistaken her for a burglar before firing through the locked door of his toilet four times.

His original six-year sentence was ruled "inappropriate" by Supreme Court of Appeal judges last month, and increased it to South Africa's minimum of 15 years for murder.

Nxumalo said the department was investigating.

Pistorius was originally convicted of culpable homicide - the equivalent of manslaughter over the killing - but this was later upgraded to murder.

He was moved to a specialist prison for inmates with physical disabilities in November 2016.
