Authorities: Woman, 77, killed by dog in suburban Chicago

Police in south suburban Alsip said a 76-year-old woman died Monday after being attacked by her dog.

Officers responded to Komensky Avenue and 116th Street in Alsip after a young man walking his dog saw the attack and called police, KTLA sister station WGN in Chicago reported.

'It was pretty horrific, ' Alsip Deputy Police Chief Shawn Schuldt told Alsip Patch. "I feel extremely bad for the family and we offer them our condolences". According to police, there had been no prior complaints to them about the dog. Police said she lived at the home where the attack occurred and the dog was a 6-year-old pit bull that was a pet at the residence.

When officers arrived, officers shot and killed the dog, a 6-year-old pit bull, because it remained aggressive, ABC 7 reports.

The incident is under investigation.
