Arizona State defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will not be on new Sun Devils coach Herm Edwards' staff.

Bennett confirmed the report Tuesday afternoon.

The 62-year-old Bennett joined Todd Graham's staff last season after working five seasons at Baylor.

Bennett said Herm Edwards did offer him a job to return but he turned it down.

The Sun Devils made an unorthodox move when they hired longtime National Football League coach and ESPN analyst Herm Edwards as their new coach.

Bennett told Sun Devil Source that health contributed to his decision and that he would coach the Sun Bowl against North Carolina State on December 29.

"I visited with Herm twice". Bennett, a Texas A&M alum who lives in College Station, Texas, with his wife, could be leaving the Sun Devils for the Aggies.

Though Bennett admitted it would have been nice to "win a few more" games, he called the 7-5 season "fun" and "gratifying". Bennett had a tough time making the decision due to how he sees the program progressing. Family always comes first and right now he needs to turn his attention to that.

"While I would have liked for defensive coordinator Phil Bennett to remain on the coaching staff, I do appreciate the fact that he has chosen not to stay based upon family reasons", Edwards stated. My top priorities right now going forward are to solidify our recruiting class and to assemble a defensive coaching staff.

Some players on the defense have received postseason honors as defensive lineman JoJo Wicker and defensive back Chase Lucas were named to the All-Pac-12 second team defense with defensive back Chad Adams, linebacker D.J. "I'm just very appreciative to all of them".
