The FAI offered its sympathies to the teenager's family and friends and said the Republic of Ireland will pay a special tribute to Dezu at the next home global in the Aviva Stadium.

He collapsed on the pitch in the second half of the match and was assisted by paramedic from Dublin Fire Brigade but was later pronounced dead.

President Higgins was among those to pay tribute, describing Izzy as brilliant.

"The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said he was" widely regarded as one of the most promising players at this age level in the country".

"The thoughts of everyone at Shelbourne FC are with his family, friends, teammates and coaches who have been devastated by this tragic loss".

"We at St Kevin's Boys Fc would like to pass on our Condolences to the family, Friends and everybody at Shelbourne Football Club after their young academy player Izzy Dezu collapsed and died in a game last night.Very Sad news Rest In Peace young man". We also feel for the players and the match officials last night.

A post on Shelbourne FC's Facebook page prior to the game described the highly anticipated clash as a "winner-takes-all" league decider.

Dezu was involved in a competitive fixture at the north Dublin complex when he suddenly collapsed.

Dezu, who played as a striker, collapsed during a Dublin and District Schoolboys match against St Kevin's Boys.
