"We'll now be able to give 300 families gifts for their kids and Christmas meals", Erin Kauffman, El Paso County Coordinator for the Salvation Army, said.

The Salvation Army continues to fund programs and services to help children and families most in need in Lake County through its annual Christmas Campaign, now in full swing with bell ringing at over 70 locations throughout Lake County.

The Salvation Army's traditional Red Kettle drive runs from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve, and they can be found outside Smith's, Walgreens and Walmart from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. As of December 13 the kettles have raised $148,237, just 39 percent of the $375,000 goal. People have been so incredibly generous in donating to the various disasters that have occurred in and out of our country this past fall.

It's the first year the police and fire departments have volunteered to man the kettles, and both Police Chief Bob DeVries and Fire Chief Jake Rhoades, along with Mayor Monica Gates, showed up in support, Palmer said. Services include food, utility and housing emergency assistance; hunger programs; youth programming and summer camp; disaster assistance; and case management/social services.
