For the first time in the history of The Apprentice, Lord Sugar has chosen to hire both of his finalists.

In an unprecedented twist, Alan Sugar was unable to choose between the two and decided it was a dead heat.

The business mogul said he "genuinely couldn't decide" between sweet firm owner Sarah Lynn, 35, and James White, 26, who runs an IT recruitment company.

Sarah Lynn and James White were the final two and they had to launch their businesses.

White's recruitment business was deemed just as worthy of the prize as Lynn's already successful candies business, which she will now attempt to expand.

In the boardroom in London's City Hall, Lord Sugar appeared unresolved as he interrogated both candidates on their business plans before conferring with his advisers Karren Brady and Claude Littner.

"It is quite obvious that there are two fantastically skilled people there", said the 70-year-old magnate before reaching his decision.

"James and Sarah were extremely impressive and their proposed business plans were very different but equally strong".

"Deciding on a victor was the most hard decision I have had to make in all 13 series of The Apprentice to date", said Lord Sugar in a statement. And it's really because of what I said in the episode. "Sarah is an expert in her field; she spotted a gap in the market".

He said: 'James - crowded market, but I've had some experience with a similar person of a similar age who is making a lot, a lot of money. "Sarah - candies. I don't have any experience of your business, OK".

In an interview with Express.co.uk, the Birmingham-based entrepreneur confessed: "The name and the branding isn't the brand that we're going to use, I've already got a brand and it's called Right Time Recruitment so we're going to stick with that".

'This particular year, I'm going to double my investment...

"I genuinely couldn't decide between them, so after deliberating long and hard, I chose to stump up £500,000 and invest in them both".

James said: 'I have always, since I was a young boy, looked up to Lord Sugar as a businessman, and to now be his business partner is literally a dream that I've always had and for that dream to come true... it's just very, very humbling'.

Sarah said after her big win: 'It feels incredible. I'm just shocked and amazed and so proud that Lord Sugar found enough in both of us to make a double investment.
