Houston HC Major Applewhite said that Clements and fellow former Bear coach Kendal Briles - hired by the Cougars as offensive coordinator after a year at FAU - have both been heavily vetted.

Briles is the son of former Baylor head coach Art Briles, who was sacked in May 2016 amid an outside investigation into Baylor's mishandling of sexual assault cases within the athletic department and the university.

Applewhite also announced the hiring of Randy Clements as run game coordinator and offensive line coach.

"We are excited to welcome Kendal, Randy and their families back to Houston".

The hires are controversial, considering both coaches were on hand during Baylor's sexual assault scandal. Currently, Briles is listed in an ongoing Title IX lawsuit against Baylor. "Because we have a lot of them at Baylor and they love football players". During the 2017 football season, Clements served as Southeastern University's offensive line coach. Briles spent the 2017 season as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida Atlantic University under head coach Lane Kiffin.

"We hold all our staff to the high standards of the University of Houston demands, and will continue to do so with the current staff". He spent nine seasons at Baylor and five seasons at Houston. "We look forward to growing our program and moving forward with both".

"Throughout this process we have researched their abilities and backgrounds with several references and have received glowing praise", Applewhite said in the statement.
