The NHL-best Tampa Bay Lightning have lost All-Star defenseman Victor Hedman for three to six weeks with a lower-body injury.

The injury means Hedman will likely miss the NHL All-Star Game, scheduled for January 28 in Tampa, after being named to the Atlantic Division squad this week.

The injury could have major implications in the short term for the East-leading Lightning, who will have a hard time replacing the All-Star defenseman, who has tallied 33 points (six goals, 27 assists) and sports a phenomenal plus-24 rating so far this season. "You can't control it". You can't replace a guy like [Hedman].

"When I guy can't really put weight on his leg, and doesn't come back, it didn't look very good", captain Steven Stamkos said after Thursday's game.

"We have some elite players on this team, but on the back end, he's our rock back there", Lightning head coach Jon Cooper told the Tampa Bay Times following Thursday's loss.

He entered Thursday's game ranked third in the National Hockey League in points for a defenseman with 33 (six goals, 27 assists). He can help dictate a lot of the play of how we're doing things.

His last significant injury was early in the 2014-15 season, when he missed more than a month with a fractured finger. "If he's out for a bit, it would probably have a little impact on our team".
