John Malkovich has been added to the awkwardly named thriller Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, in which Zac Efron will play the leading role as notorious serial killer Ted Bundy.

Malkovich is set to play Judge Edward Cowart, the man who presided over the 1979 trial of serial killer Ted Bundy. The trial was nationally televised, and drew media attention as Bundy eventually represented himself and developed a rapport with the judge.

Directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Joe Berlinger, the film stars Zac Efron as Bundy, the serial killer who kidnapped, assaulted and killed almost 30 girls before being caught.

The story is told from the point of view of Kloepfer, who had no knowledge of the murders while she was with Bundy. Berlinger is directing a screenplay by Michael Werwie, which has generated a great deal of buzz after being included on the Black List. Shortly before his execution, he confessed to 30 homicides committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978.

The project was announced by Voltage Pictures at the Cannes Film Festival previous year with Efron attached. Michael Costigan is producing for COTA Entertainment. He is repped by WME.

A two-time Oscar nominee (for In The Line of Fire in 1993 and Places in the Heart in 1984), Malkovich recently appeared in Deepwater Horizon. Ninjas Runnin Wild's Jason Barrett and Jonathan Deckter are executive producers.
