Former Massachusetts Senate President Stan Rosenberg has separated from his husband Byron Hefner. He said in December that Hefner was entering treatment for alcoholism.

However, their support - gauged through interviews with senators and senior staff - is contingent at least on Rosenberg being cleared by the internal Senate investigation into allegations raised in a Globe story that his husband, Bryon Hefner, sexually harassed four men.

"I have", Rosenberg said, when asked if had separated from his husband of one year.

Rosenberg declined to say whether he is interested in returning to the Senate presidency.

Rosenberg returned to Beacon Hill to attend a farewell speech from Thomas McGee, who resigned his Senate in January after being sworn in as mayor of Lynn.

The Senate Ethics Committee has hired a legal team to investigate whether Rosenberg violated Senate rules in connection with the allegations against Hefner.

Hefner's accusers also said he bragged about the influence he had over Senate policy decisions because of his marriage to Rosenberg. Worcester Democratic Sen. Harriette Chandler was elected to fill the post of president during the interim.

"I am looking forward to the completion of the investigation that's underway, and I am here representing my constituents and plan on continuing to do my job", Rosenberg told reporters Thursday.

"I have not discussed anything with regards to what's going to happen once the investigation is complete with my colleagues".

In fact, Rosenberg said senators have been advised to limit their interactions with him for as long as the investigation is ongoing.

"At this point, they have been counseled that they should minimize contact with me", Rosenberg said of his fellow senators, "so that we can be sure, out of an abundance of caution, that nothing can be said when the investigation is over that there was any interference".
