Dramatic images of miraculous escape of airline metres away from Black Sea

The dramatic scene occurred on Saturday night at Trabzon Airport, the final destination of the Boeing 737-800 plane that departed the Turkish capital of Ankara earlier in the day.

A passenger jet slid off the runway and became stuck in mud after landing at an worldwide airport in the Black Sea province of Trabzon late Saturday, state-run news agency Anadolu reported. All 168 passengers and crew aboard were safely evacuated with only minor injuries reported, but as the sun rose on Sunday, it became clear how close they had come to a far bigger disaster.

A passenger plane skidded off the runway and was left stuck in mud off the edge of a cliff in Turkey.

One of the passengers, Fatma Gordu, told Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu the crash sparked panic on board the flight.

Passengers panicked. "We tilted to the side, the front was down while the plane's rear was up. We will reopen the airport to air traffic as soon as possible", he said.

The cause of the accident was not yet known and the airport was closed for several hours while authorities investigated.
