The programme that was being discussed at the White House is called Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, said. "Do we need more Haitians?'" Durbin said. The term suggests dirty or very poor. Trump also reportedly suggested the USA should take immigrants from countries such as Norway, whose prime minister he met with the previous day. Trump had met with the Norwegian prime minister on Wednesday.

"So, that's what he said today in front of the cameras, but remember behind the cameras this is what the president just said yesterday", Lemon said before repeating Trump's previous racist remarks.

In a series of tweets, the president denied using such vulgar language.

Trump disputed the reports in a tweet Friday morning, although he did not directly deny using the word. "What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made - a big setback for DACA!". Never said "take them out".

"I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians", the president said.

Trump's reported comments, made during closed-door White House talks on an immigration deal on Thursday, were a reaction to a plan drafted by a bipartisan group of senators to protect juvenile immigrants from deportation and make other changes to immigration laws and border security. Dr. Alveda King said Saturday on "Fox & Friends" such claims about Trump are "outrageous".

Reactions in the U.S.

After an emergency session to weigh Trump's remarks, the African Group of United Nations ambassadors said it was "concerned at the continuing and growing trend from the U.S. administration toward Africa and people of African descent to denigrate the continent and people of color".

Members of his own Republican party have also distanced themselves from Trump's comments.

Africans and Haitians come from "shithole" countries?

"Now", she said, "this is how he treats us". And Rep. Bill Foster, a Democrat from Naperville, on Friday called Trump's reference "disgusting, divisive (and) racist".

The normally routine examination comes after the 71-year-old president has pushed back against suggestions by his detractors that he is mentally unfit for the job, declaring himself "a very stable genius". In 2015, America transacted US$37 billion in business with sub-Saharan Africa, US$7.6 billion with El Salvador and US$2 billion with Haiti, a country still ravaged by history as well as the after effects of the devastating 2010 quake.
