Isaiah Thomas turns down Celtics tribute offer

Isaiah Thomas finally gave in to a growing outcry tonight and requested that the Celtics not hold a video tribute for him on February 11, the same day that the team will retire Paul Pierce's number.

About two weeks after that announcement, the Celtics traded Thomas in a package that brought back Kyrie Irving.

He would blossom into a legitimate MVP contender in the 2016-17 campaign, when he averaged 28.9 points and 5.9 assists per game, while leading the Celtics all the way into the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cavs. "But this one day should belong to Paul Pierce".

The Celtics initially had a plan that would have avoided this conflict altogether-that was to show the tribute video on January 3, when the Cavaliers made their first visit to Boston.

Pierce doubled down the next night on ESPN's NBA Countdown, noting, "I just feel like this: You only get your jersey retired once".

Earlier Tuesday, Pierce's former teammates Rajon Rondo and Tony Allen backed up Pierce's statements that the tribute to Thomas should move to another date.

Told that Pierce has spoken out against the idea of a Thomas tribute during his own special night, Allen said, "Yeah, I'm with Pierce, man".

"I'm with Pierce, man", Allen said with the Pelicans in town to visit the Celtics. Nobody put in more work than Pierce. Why would they honor him on that same day?

Added Allen: "Let my man get his jersey retired, man. Let him embrace that, man". He put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in this organization, man, and capitalized and had good results. Struggled with the team. Turned back around and won a championship [the next season]. I remember losing 19 straight with that man. Talk about Paul Pierce, man, don't mention his name, the guy's name that don't stand in the same frame.

"I don't know why they're so mad about it". "So big salute to my boy Paul Pierce". My big brother. My homey.
