Amazon released its short list of 20 possible regions for its second headquarters, and metropolitan NY made the list. Toronto made the list as well, keeping the company's worldwide options open.

Those six locations, as well as 14 others, made it onto Amazon's not-so-short shortlist Thursday of places under consideration for the online retailing giant's second headquarters.

New York City is one of the 19 cities on the list.

Besides Austin, another Texas city made the cut: Dallas. In the South, Miami and Atlanta are being considered. The top 20 cities are: Atlanta, GA, Austin, TX, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Columbus, OH, Dallas, TX, Denver, CO, Indianapolis, IN, Los Angeles, CA, Miami, FL, Montgomery County, MD, Nashville, TN, Newark, NJ, New York City, NY, Northern Virginia, VA, Philadelphia, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, Raleigh, NC, Toronto, ON and Washington D.C. As you see, no cities in Washington, Idaho, or OR made the cut.

Amazon expects to decide on the winning city this year.

The company's announcement last fall that it was looking for a second home launched a fierce competition among cities looking to lure Amazon and its promise of 50,000 new jobs and construction spending of more than $5 billion. The mayors of these top 20 cities will now fight to the death in a Battle Royale-style island arena... er wait, no actually they'll just move on the next portion of Amazon's submission phase, which includes further proposal evaluation and working directly with the candidate cities on getting more info. More than 15 states and cities, including Chicago, turned down requests from The Associated Press to detail the promises they've made.
