Liverpool and Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Goretzka, who is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs as he is in the final six months of his contract at Schalke.

Schalke remain determined to keep hold of Goretzka and have offered to make the Germany worldwide the highest paid player in the club's history.

Despite Heidel's claims, Bayern Munich are believed to be winning the race for Goretzka ahead of strong interest from Barcelona. Goretzka is undoubtedly a talented midfielder but once the Bundesliga champions came in for him, it always looked as if there was only one place he would be heading, and not even the lure of compatriot Jurgen Klopp could see him join Liverpool.

Bayern are 13 points clear at the top of the table and are on course for a record-extending sixth straight Bundesliga title.

Bayern declared their desire to take the 22-year-old to Bavaria last week, the Bundesliga champions' executive board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stating they would be "crazy" if they did not consider signing a free agent Germany global.

"Leon Goretzka informed us earlier this week that he wishes to leave the club and join Bayern", Heidel said.

"We were very sorry to hear this".

"All of the club, including (club president Clemens) Tonnies, is fighting to keep him here". "We are prepared for this".

Goretzka will hope to finish the season well with Schalke to make sure of a place in Germany's World Cup squad.
