However, they have again struggled this time around and find themselves entrenched in the drop-zone following Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to bottom club Cologne.

Hamburg are hopeful of appointing Gisdol's successor quickly. Defeat to Cologne the night before was the side's fourth in succession and it left Hamburg just three points off the bottom.

A club statement read: "Following yesterday's 2-0 defeat to Köln, the board and sporting director Jens Todt have made the decision to relieve head coach Markus Gisdol and his assistants Frank Fröhling and Frank Kaspari of their duties at the club".

"Dismissals ahead of schedule are never wanted but we believe that a new impulse is necessary to maintain our top-flight status", Hamburg's CEO Heribert Bruchhagen said.

According to German daily Bild, former Hamburg midfielder Bernd Hollerbach, 48, who played for the club from 1996-2004, is set to take charge.

Suitably impressed with his impact, Hamburg gave Gisdol a new contract until the end of June 2019 in March a year ago.

Gisdol said after the loss that that he predicted a "brutal" second half of the season, but he will not be the coach presiding over it following Sunday's news. "We need to formalise a few things first - we know already who the new coach will be".

While it finished five points clear in 2016, the club needed playoffs to survive in 2015 and 2014.
