"The Death of Stalin is aimed at inciting hatred and enmity, violating the dignity of the Russian (Soviet) people, promoting ethnic and social inferiority, which points to the movie's extremist nature", the attorneys said.

Veep creator Iannucci told the Guardian: "All the Russians we've shown the film to so far, including Russian press, have said how much they enjoyed and appreciated the film".

A license was issued, but there were new calls for its revocation after a recent showing for movie industry figures, lawmakers, Culture Ministry officials, and others.

An advisory committee to the ministry had earlier recommended postponing the release to avoid it clashing with the 75th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Stalingrad, after officials and film directors attended a private viewing on Monday.

The Russian Cultural Ministry has made a decision to withdraw the distribution certificate for the British-French political satire film The Death of Stalin, Acting Director of the ministry's Cinema Department Olga Lyubimova told TASS on Tuesday. The film had been set for a limited release in cinemas from Thursday after local distributors Volga Film gained an 18+ certificate.

Centring on the final days of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1953 and the subsequent power struggle, The Death of Stalin is an adaptation of Fabien Nury's graphic novel of the same name. They say two things: it's amusing, but it's true.

Nadezhda Usmanova, the head of the Russian Military Historical Society, told Reuters the film was "despicable", adding: 'It's a bad film, it's a boring film, and it's vile, repugnant and insulting'. "I'm still confident we can get it in cinemas". The letter castigated the film for "lampooning the history of our country" and "blackening the memory of our citizens who conquered fascism", the Tass news agency reported.

According to the lawyers, the film portrays some historical characters, including Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov, in a distorted way.

It was not immediately clear if the film could still be shown in Russian Federation at a later date.
