Snapchat makes Stories easier to share. Just not yours

There's no getting around the fact that Snapchat has a user growth problem, so it's smart that the company is making it easier for people who like and use Snapchat to share content they find within beyond the app itself.

If you had a sudden inkling to share the events of last night on the town with your parents, for example (although we've no idea why you would), the new feature doesn't work like that.

Both Search Stories and Our Stories will be available outside of Snapchat for 30 days.

While in some ways external sharing of Snapchat Stories is counterintuitive to the app's focus on ephemerality, Snap has built that in to its sharing mechanism, too.

This includes content published to the user-generated Our Stories and Search Stories section of the app, as well as videos or pictures from celebrities and public figures, like Kim Kardashian-West or Jeremy Corbyn, which Snap classes as "Official Stories".

Select "Share Story" and then choose how you'd like to share it outside of Snapchat - by text, e-mail, or posting to other platforms. You can also copy the link.

The company, which reported lower-than-expected 178 million daily active users in the third quarter ended September 30, has been trying to attract new users and rolling out features, aiming to increase the time users spend on the app.

At the time of the announcement, chief executive Evan Spiegel said the aim of the redesign was to make Snapchat "more personal" by better separating personal content with that from publishers.

Snapchat Stories are branching out, hoping to bring more people in.

The feature is not the rumoured "Stories Everywhere" feature which will let you share your own pics, but a feature created to let you easily repost Stories shared by celebs or publications.

If you share one with somebody who isn't on Snapchat, it will be available to watch for 30 days.

According to the firm, Snapchat is one of the world's most used cameras, with the company's figures claiming more than 3.5 billion Snaps are created every day in the app.
