Nick Kyrgios levelled Australia's World Group first-round match against Germany yesterday with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Jan-Lennard Struff.

Germany's 2-1 lead puts the onus on Australia to avoid defeat in the tie by winning two singles matches against higher-ranked opponents on Sunday.

Earlier, Alexander Zverev clinched the final two points of the match with service winners to give him a 7-5, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Alex de Minaur on hard courts at Pat Rafter Arena.

Hewitt replaced Jordan Thompson, who won a doubles match with Peers in Belgium past year, with Ebden in a late team change on Thursday. In both tournaments, he was cheered on by captain Lleyton Hewitt.

The visitors sprang a late change on Saturday, replacing Peter Gojowczyk with Jan-Lennard Struff.

Puetz and Struff are also not a regular tour combination but have not lost a doubles match at any level, taking out a Challenger title and now two Davis Cup rubber together a year ago.

Puetz - a lowly number 144 in the doubles rankings - made his Cup debut previous year when he combined with Struff to deliver a key five-set doubles win against Portugal to help Germany seal victory.

It will be an academic exercise if Kyrgios can not first take a fourth win from five senior matches against Zverev.

Peers, the world's fourth-ranked doubles player, made a good play on the return and the Australians broke serve before Peers raised his game in the second-set tiebreak.
