It seems that Microsoft may have pushed this update to Insiders by mistake, as a new update for the Photos app (version 2018.18011.13438.0) brings back the familiar mobile layout today. Microsoft's own photos team has been working on the app for several months, and it links directly to Windows 10's built-in photos app.

Considering that Windows 10 Mobile is now in maintenance mode, it was very surprising to see such a big update for the Photos app last week. We don't except the mobile OS to get new features (even through app updates) this year, but you never know.

Microsoft notes that Photos Companion aims to ease the struggle of quickly transferring images between mobile and PC. Also, if in case the Import from mobile over Wi-Fi option is not visible in the Photos app on your Windows computer, you need to enable the Show additional preview features option that is available in the Settings section of the Photos app. And if you are using the Photos app on Windows 10 and want to take advantage of its rich new photo editing and video creation capabilities, this looks like a great way to get at your phone-based content.
