New Orleans gets 14 nods on James Beard semifinalists list

Last year, Dallas had several contenders: Flora Street Cafe, semifinalist for Best New Restaurant; FT33's Maggie Huff, semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef; and several semifinalists for Best Chef: Southwest: Omar Flores, Casa Rubia (which closed in July 2017); Teiichi Sakurai, Tei-An; John Tesar, Knife; and David Uygur, Lucia.

Mike Lata, The Ordinary, Charleston, nominated for Outstanding Chef.

The nominees will be announced in Philadelphia on Wednesday, March 14 during a live-streamed event, and the 2018 James Beard Award Gala will take place in Chicago on Monday, May 7. Hunter, Madison Magazine's 2015 Chef of the Year, is also the co-founder of the Underground Food Collective, which includes Underground Catering, Underground Butcher and his restaurant Forequarter.

Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street Cafe won "Best Chef: Midwest" previous year, the second St. Louis chef to do so, following Gerard Craft of Niche in 2015.

Vicia is a semifinalist for "Best New Restaurant", a nationwide category.

This is Randolph's third consecutive year as a semifinalist in the Midwest category.

The 2018 James Beard Award nominees have been announced and SC can be proud of the chefs and restaurants being recognized as among the nation's best.

Also, The Atomic Lounge in Birmingham is a semifinalist for outstanding bar program.

-- Highlands Bar and Grill's Frank Stitt, for best chef in the Southeast in 2001.

This is the second nomination for Rising Star Chef award for Alan Sternberg, who was a semifinalist for the award in 2016.

Bacchanal, the wine shop that morphed into a wine bar, wine garden and unique oenophile oasis in the Bywater, is nominated alongside more traditional restaurants around the country.

Last year, the Best Chef: South award went to Rebecca Wilcomb of Herbsaint. All JBF Award winners receive a certificate and a medallion engraved with the James Beard Foundation Awards insignia.

Every year, the foundation honors locally owned restaurants with its America's Classics awards.
