Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China captured silver with a first-place showing in the short program and third-place effort in the free skate, while the Canadian duo of Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford nabbed bronze. This time, after earning two bronze medals at previous Olympics with a different partner, Savchenko finally got her first gold.

In what was an exciting and nerve-wrecking pairs' final, Savchenko and her partner Bruno Massot soared to the top of the podium to be crowned Olympic Champions at the Gangneung Ice Arena, edging out the reigning world champions Wenjing Sui and Cong Hon, of China, by just 0.43 points to win the first Olympic pairs' skating gold for Germany in 66 years.

Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim became the first Americans to land a quad twist in an Olympic competition when they opened their free skate with it.

After finishing second in the short program, less than one point behind Sui and Han, Olympic Athletes from Russia Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov were inconsistent in their free skate, with Tarasova falling on the throw triple Salchow.

France's Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres finished in 5th place with a score of 218.53. The mistakes sealed their chances of reaching the podium. The team had three clean programs over a span of four days as they skated their free skate in the team event for Italy Monday before competing in the individual event Wednesday and Thursday.

For the Frenchman, the opportunity to skate with Savchenko was too good to turn down, but when he requested his release from the French federation (FFSG), he was left in figure-skating limbo for a year and a half, a period during which he was ineligible for competition.

Newly crowned Olympic bronze medalists in the team event, Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim made history, becoming the first USA pair to execute a quad twist on Olympic ice.

"I was quite nervous, this being my first Olympic Games", Sui said. "It was the highlight of our program, unfortunately. We heard that score when we were on the ice", Duhamel said. I was sick last night and this morning with a normal stomach bug. "I think his fatigue might have set in because he was concerned for me". A former student opened fire on his school, killing 17 people and injuring 15. Massot, still a French citizen, was cleared to skate with Savchenko for Germany in October, 2016.

Savchenko told reporters she had felt like the pair would be making history on Thursday and after their short program, the duo regrouped and decided "we have nothing to lose and we will fight like tigers". "It's been hard to finish with a more than disappointing skate, with a heavy heart for those who were lost today".

With that the 2018 Olympic pairs champions went off to celebrate.
