People in Western Australia's north are continuing to prepare for more unsafe weather, with a severe tropical cyclone likely to form over the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a developing tropical low is about 195km north-northeast of Kununurra and 295km east of Kalumburu.

The cyclone was originally forecast to develop in to a category three tomorrow but it is now expected to reach a category two before crossing the coast north of Sandfire this afternoon or evening.

The cyclone is expected to form off the west Kimberley coast this afternoon.

The system has already brought with it very heavy rain and strong winds, with 360mm of rain falling in Broome since yesterday morning.

Gales with gusts to 100km/h may develop in coastal areas between Kuri Bay and Bidyadanga on Friday and may extend to Wallal Downs and Port Hedland early Saturday.

A blue alert is in place for people between Cape Leveque and De Grey in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions.

People were warned to secure or remove loose material around homes and ensure emergency kits were ready.
