The first of the new coins, showing Peter Rabbit went on sale Monday on the Royal Mint's website.

Four new 50p coins featuring some of Beatrix Potter's favourite fictional characters are to be released, the Royal Mint has announced.

The new designs on offer show Flopsy Bunny, Mrs Tittlemouse, a mouse from The Tailor of Gloucester, and, of course, Peter Rabbit, each on their own 50p coin.

Proof coins are specially produced to a much higher standard of finish.

They included a different Peter Rabbit design, as well as Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle coins.

The coins will enter general circulation later this year, with special coloured editions available to purchase from £60.

Earlier Beatrix Potter-inspired coins featured Tom Kitten, Benjamin Bunny and Jeremy Fisher.

The coins are created by the Royal Mint in Wales, which produces all United Kingdom coinage.

It is the latest design in the mint's Beatrix Potter collection, launched in 2016 to commemorate 150 years since her birth.

The 50p coins have been produced in a hand-painted style, based on the animal characters from Potter's books.

Anne Jessopp, the Royal Mint's newly named CEO, said the Beatrix Potter range had grown in popularity since Peter Rabbit was first introduced onto British coins in 2016.

"Since then, Peter Rabbit has been joined by a number of furry friends throughout the years".

The story has never been out of print since it was first published by Frederick Warne & Co - today an imprint of Penguin Random House.
