Other Florida beaches on the list are Siesta Beach at No. 2, South Beach at No. 4, Fort Lauderdale Beach at No. 6, St. Pete Beach at No. 7, Hollywood Beach at No. 8 and Fort Myers Beach at No. 14.

The ranking is published every winter in time for spring break and snowbird season, when sun-seeking holidaymakers plan their great escape.

When it came to the best in the world, however, the Caribbean came out top, with the idyllic Grace Bay, Providenciales on the Turks and Caicos - fabled for its white sands and crystal clear water - taking top spot. Grace Bay was up from the number two ranking a year ago and reclaimed the top spot it held in 2016.

The travel planning and booking website said it bases its list of the top 25 beaches "on the quantity and quality of traveler reviews and ratings for beaches on TripAdvisor, gathered over a 12-month period".

Over in the U.S., the most popular beach is Clearwater Beach in Florida, perched on a barrier island that offers calm shallow waters, making it ideal for families.

Siesta Beach, in Siesta Key, Florida, came in second place, but was the 2017 victor, according to TripAdvisor. Cuba's Varadero Beach came in at three, followed by Eagle Beach in Aruba at four and Seven Mile Beach in the Caymans at five.
