Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia presented new amendments to a draft resolution that calls for a ceasefire and the delivery of medical and humanitarian aid in Syria.

"I believe eastern Ghouta can not wait", Guterres said of the northern rebel-held enclave that has been under siege by pro-government forces since 2013.

The recent escalation in violence has killed at least 426 people and injured hundreds more, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group says.

Over a three-day period, the regime has reportedly carried out 260 separate attacks in Eastern Ghouta, killing more than 250 civilian residents of the district.

Qatar stressed in the statement made by the Official Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry H E Lulwa Al Khater that "Eastern Ghouta is one of the De-escalation Zones, and these operations could hinder worldwide efforts to reaching a political solution".

Over 200 people on Thursday protested outside the Russian consulate in Istanbul against the deadly assault on Syria's rebel-held enclave of Eastern Ghouta.

The group, also known as the White Helmets, said government forces targeted Kafr Batna with air strikes, artillery fire, and barrel bombs - crude, explosives-filled oil drums dropped from helicopters at high altitudes. We hope that a 30-day ceasefire, which will be discussed in the United Nations, still held.

"Russia and Iran must stop the regime", Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

The civilian casualties and devastation there are among the worst in Syria since the government captured rebel-held parts of Aleppo in intense fighting in 2016. The ongoing multi-front civil war, fought primarily between the forces of President Bashar al-Assad along with allies, and multiple opposing forces, is a spinoff from the 2011 Arab Spring movements of 2011 when protests seeking his ouster were violently put down by the Russia-backed President.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for the European Union to step up pressure on Russian Federation and Iran to end the violence in Syria.

Adopted by the Security Council unanimously in late 2015, the resolution calls for a lasting ceasefire and a viable political settlement in war-torn Syria.

"Since the beginning of the conflict, tens of thousands of people have died in Eastern Ghouta alone, and that is enough, these people must not die", Çavuşoğlu said.
