'Shocked to hear,' says President Kovind on Sridevi's death

Terming Sridevi as "a powerhouse of acting", Union Minister Smriti Z Irani also expressed condolence on the demise of the veteran actor. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu condoled her death on Twitter by saying she was "an extremely versatile and talented film star, who acted in Telegu, Hindi and other South Indian languages".

In a tweet condoling her death, President Kovind praised her as an "inspiration for other actors" and said that she "left millions of fans heartbroken".

Tamil superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are saddened by the news of veteran actor Sridevi's sudden demise. My thoughts are with her family and fans. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also offered his condolences on her death.

The 54-year-actress Sridevi was in Dubai to attend the marriage function of actress Sonam Kapoor's cousin Mohit Marwah, accompanied by her husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi Kapoor. She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances. "My condolences to her family and close associates (sic)", President Kovind Tweeted. The Prime Minister said, his thoughts are with the family and admirers of Sridevi in this hour of grief.

"Shocked to know that Senior Bollywood Actress Sri Devi Ji suffered a massive cardiac arrest & is no more with us". "Sridevi - a powerhouse of acting, a long journey embellished with success comes to a sudden end". Her demise is a big loss to the film industry. "May her soul rest in peace", Gandhi tweeted.

In a career that started at the age of four, spanned four decades, she acted in nearly 300 films as diverse as "Chaalbaaz", "Chandni", Mr India", "English Vinglish" and "Mom'.

The government of India awarded her Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour, in 2013.
