United Airlines ends discount for travel to NRA annual meeting

Visa stressed in a statement that it has no "contractual or financial relationship with the NRA", adding that financial institutions decide which organizations to partner with on Visa co-branded cards.

The growing exodus of corporate names, ranging from a major insurer to auto rental brands and a household moving company, comes after the NRA launched a counter-offensive against a student-led campaign for tighter U.S. gun ownership laws.

However other companies continue to offer discounts to NRA members. Vehicle rental company Hertz and Symantec Corp., the software company that makes Norton Antivirus technology, did the same.

The giant insurance company Chubb, a successor to Philadelphia's old Insurance Co. of North America and still partly based in the city's Washington Square section, said Friday it has discontinued a gun-insurance program that protected NRA members from lawsuits by people they shoot.

The move to cut ties with the NRA could carry huge risks for the Nebraska bank, according to one expert.

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines both announced on Saturday that they will cut ties with the National Rifle Association amid growing calls from gun-control advocates following a mass shooting in Parkland, Florida earlier this month.

Survivors of the shooting have focused much of their advocacy attention on GOP lawmakers who have received campaign contributions from the group.

American businesses have become increasingly politically aware and have participated in boycotts over the past few years against states over LGBT rights. The company did not describe what kind of benefits had been offered to NRA members.

Trump, during a roundtable discussion on school shootings with state and local officials at the White House, said he had spoken to officials from the NRA, calling them "good people" and "patriots" who are "ready to do things". The NRA "member benefits" page offers savings on a credit card, hearing aids, life insurance, home security systems, auto purchases, moving fees, prescription drugs, and branded checkbooks, among other things. "By booking your itinerary with United Airlines or Delta Airlines, you will receive up to 2-10 percent off their online airfares". Hotel Planner, unmoved by the controversy, said it would stick by the NRA.

A representative did not respond to Business Insider's follow-up questions about why Enterprise was ending the program, though the company has been flooded with boycott threats on social media.

Twitter users told corporate accounts they would stop buying from firms that maintained promotional collaborations with the NRA, which are created to make the $40 annual subscription to the association more enticing for gun owners.

Previously, First National Bank offered members of the gun-rights organization an NRA Visa card, which offered a $40 cash-back bonus.

Enterprise followed a few hours later on Thursday.

The Hertz Corp.: The rental vehicle company ended its discount program for NRA members.

By Friday, the list of defectors expanded to include Symantec Corp, which ended an discount program for its LifeLock identity theft product.
