US Women Defeat Team Canada To Win Ice Hockey Olympic Gold

Germany didn't even qualify for the last Olympics, and won its only other medal in 1976, as West Germany. "It is not a good feeling to lose a game like that".

While Marco Sturm and his men will take a few hours to enjoy their historic win this Friday night, one can be assured that it will be back to business on Saturday, as they look to prepare for Sunday's even bigger game, against the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation, who have looked very much the strongest team in the tournament so far.

"I don't know", forward Andrew Ebbett said. Canada played the second half of the game without goal-scorer Gilbert Brule, who was ejected for a hit to the head of Germany's David Wolf.

The anguish written on the faces expressed something a generation of Canadian hockey players had never felt before - the agony of defeat.

The most gut-wrenching of those USA defeats came in Sochi when, leading 2-0 with under four minutes to play, Canada scored twice to force overtime.

The Germans, fresh off a shocking 4-3 quarter-final victory over Sweden, took a commanding 4-1 lead at Gangneung Hockey Centre on goals by Matthias Plachta and Frank Mauer three minutes 28 seconds apart early in the second period.

After three back-and-forth ends in the final, the Swedes squandered a point in the fourth despite having the last-rock advantage known as the hammer.

Patrick Hager restored the three-goal advantage only for Canada to fight back from 4-1 down at the start of the third period. It started with high-sticking and faceoff violation penalties 36 seconds apart and unraveled when Macek scored.

He's a dual citizen who was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but didn't look the slightest bit conflicted as he pumped his fist following a 5-on-3 power-play goal.

An Olympics without National Hockey League talent for the first time since 1994 lived up to its billing as a wide-open affair, Germans booking their best global showing since a 1953 West German world runner-up effort.

While this is a awful result for Canada, even Kennedy could see the value in having teams other than Canada in the gold medal games here.

"Everyone's surprised. You saw the celebration by Germany, they're surprised", said analyst P.J. Stock.

They beat all of the teams chosen instead of them. "It's like a family in there".

"So this is the new normal for Canada, and people need to get used to that".

"That's who we are", John Landsteiner said. "We're not the fastest team".

"Canada will always be the world's great curling nation, but it does not follow that we will always be the very best at it", Kelly wrote. "Everybody has a job and everybody did their job". Medals are supposed to be worn by players around their neck for respect during the closing ceremony and post-game activities. Canada won four gold medals in freestyle skiing and two in figure skating, where it has seven overall. The Team Canada men's hockey team we've known for so long has always been such a safe bet.

"No reason for it", Ebett said.

On the grim day that saw Kevin Koe became the first Canadian men's skip to exit the Olympics without a medal, maybe it was understandable that at least one member of his rink was finding a positive spin to a shocking historic failure.
