USA curlers' first gold medals were the wrong ones

With the score deadlocked at 5-5 on Saturday, U.S. skip John Shuster provided some last-rock magic with a pinpoint double take-out for five that left their Swedish opponents stunned as the Gangneung Curling Centre erupted into chants of "USA, USA".

Sweden wins the silver medal for the second time since curling returned to the Olympics in 1998. He also delivered a huge takeout of two Sweden stones in the 7th end of the gold medal match.

Shuster promptly devoted himself to forming a new team - made up of 2014 teammate John Landsteiner, Tyler George and Matt Hamilton - came up with "The Rejects" moniker, and they returned to the top of USA Curling taking the sport it to new heights for the U.S.

The U.S. men's team is heading to its first gold medal game in Olympics history after upsetting curling powerhouse Canada Thursday morning. They continued to put on the pressure on, and that wasn't more apparent than in the eighth end.

"We knew we were going to lose", said Sweden's team leader, Niklas Edin, via the Times. Magnificent, I'm so proud of you guys!

"It's no big deal", beamed Shuster, who was competing at his fourth Olympics and was part of the United States of America team that took bronze in Turin in 2006.

"It wasn't a big deal at all, I promise", John Shuster said.

The skipper of Team USA was Olympic veteran John Shuster.

Sweden purposefully blanked the first end after both teams quickly ran through rocks, none of which stayed. "There's a reason why we play it, and there's a reason why we love it as much as we do". Shuster and Polo were on that 2006 team.

The Swedes would not be rattled, answering with two in the fifth as the seesaw battle continued with the USA replying with a pair in the sixth and Sweden getting one back in the seventh to leave the teams deadlocked on 5-5 with three ends to play. Switzerland beat Canada in the third-place game on Friday for bronze.
