The service now has more than 159 million active users, in over 60 countries (most of Europe, most of the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Asia). The premium service will be priced at $6 (NIS 19.9) per month and include tracks by local and global artists as well as playlists compiled by local radio stations and celebrities.

Spotify utilizes all kinds of futuristic machine learning algorithms to recommend music to its listeners, but the streaming service rolled out a new feature this month that makes use of its human touch. The Israel launch means that Spotify is now available in 62 countries.

As of December 2017, Spotify had 159 million users, 71 million of whom were paying subscribers, according to company data, making it the world's most popular music streaming service, followed by Apple Music with 36 million subscribers.

Spotify now touts of having 71 million premium subscribers and 159 million people who use the service at least once a month. Notably, however, Apple doesn't offer an ad-supported free tier.

In addition to the 35 million songs already available on Spotify, it is also building up a collection of Israeli music and is already working with a range of local artists.

Spotify is expected to go public on the New York Stock Exchange in the coming weeks despite losing almost $1.5 billion in 2017.

The company said this is its first venture in Africa.
