The bus driver of a charter tour bus carrying high school students was killed Tuesday when the bus crashed in Alabama near the Florida-Alabama state line, police said.

The tour bus, which was transporting a high-school band, crashed off the Interstate 10 expressway into a 60ft ravine, injuring between 12 and 20 people, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Office.

The bus plummeted into the 50-foot ravine around 6 a.m. CT and authorities believe about 45 people were on the charter bus bound for Houston.

The Sheriff's Office said injured people were taken to hospitals in Baldwin County as well as Pensacola. We're told five of the passengers were in serious condition and one in critical condition.

The sheriff said it wasn't immediately clear what caused the bus to enter the grassy median, which abruptly ends at a steep embankment where the interstate passes over Cowpen Creek, about 25 miles west of Pensacola, Fla., and 30 miles east of Mobile, Ala.

Several ambulances and helicopters were used to evacuate injured passengers, said Asst.

"Everybody is being transferred to a hospital to at least be checked out", said Elliott.

A call center was established at 251-972-6807 for family members looking for their relatives who were aboard the bus, authorities said.

A family member tells KHOU 11 the high schoolers were from Channelview and on their way back home to Texas after a trip to Disney, but Channelview ISD has not yet confirmed this information.

According to Loxley Police, I-10 eastbound is shut down because a tour bus has fallen off a ravine.

"I pray for a speedy recovery for all those injured, and I am especially grateful for the heroic actions of the Alabama first responders that undoubtedly helped save lives today", Abbott said.

Our sister site says I-10 was closed in both directions near the crash site and traffic was being diverted at exit 49 to Highway 59.

We will be updating this story throughout the morning and day.
