He added, "There were secrets we kept from each other that we revealed only after the second surgery", he said. Jimmy also spoke about how it was very spontaneous of him to address his viewers last spring on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. "The biggest one was that, I think subconsciously, we didn't want to get too close to the baby, because we didn't know what was going to happen.I don't know if that's right or wrong or common or uncommon".

In the April issue of O magazine, which is now on newsstands, Oprah Winfrey asks Kimmel if it was "scary" to share so much of his personal life and points of view with his viewers. I wasn't intending to cry, though I knew I probably would.

"I don't know if it was scary, but it was uncomfortable, and it's not something I looked forward to", he said.

"There wasn't a lot of crying", he said, "partly because I felt like it would upset other members of my family if I got upset".

"According to polls I've seen, it has cost me commercially", he told Oprah Winfrey. "But when I told her I was feeling that way, she said, 'Oh, I'm so happy you said that because I was feeling that way too, and I didn't want to express it'".

"I know my job is, for the most part, to entertain people and make them laugh. That said, if I can be selfish every once in a while and talk about something serious that's important to me, then I do want to take that opportunity", Kimmel tells Winfrey. I pick my battles. "It taught me that I have a much more powerful platform than I realized", he said. "To be honest, it minimizes the importance of something like [the Oscars], which a year ago to me seemed to be the more important thing in the world".
