Netflix's 'The Crown' Paid Claire Foy Less Than Co-Star Matt Smith

The makers of The Crown have admitted that Claire Foy was paid less than the actor who played her husband. Mackie acknowledged that Smith's experience on Doctor Who fueled the salary disparity.

Foy, 33, won't reap the benefits of the show's new policy, however, as "The Crown" has re-cast the roles of the royal family for seasons three and four.

Netflix's The Crown may be one of the most expensive series ever made, but whoever crafted the budget clearly wasn't thinking about the optics of paying the queen less than her male co-star.

This demonstrates the problematic wage gap in the industry. "Who" on television - one of Britain's most popular shows, the producers said. Most recently, it was revealed that Michelle Williams made virtually nothing in comparison with her "All the Money in the World costar Mark Wahlberg, despite their near-equal star status".

According to Variety, on Tuesday, the show's producers said at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem that Foy, who won a Golden Globe for her work on the show past year, made less money than her on-screen husband, actor Matt Smith.

Despite winning a Golden Globe for her performance, Foy's salary was lower than that of Matt Smith as the young Duke of Edinburgh.

She was also nominated at the BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Awards.

"Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen", said Mackie. In 2017 and 2018, she won best actress in a drama at the SAG awards.

The producers insisted the pay discrepancy would be changed for future seasons - however, that will be of little consolation to Foy, who will no longer star in the show. Now, I could have accepted this sort of thing in the first season, begrudgingly, but by season two, there should have been some sort of pay bump for Foy, although I'm sure there was a contract issue that would have protected the production.

Olivia Colman will play the Queen, while the role of Philip has not yet been announced.
