5 times we cried during This Is Us season 2, episode 18

The series has also taken what easily could have been a exhausted subplot, involving Randall's foster child Deja (Lyric Ross), and in the last few episodes broadened that into something more resonant than clichéd, while presenting Randall with a parenting challenge that, as is so often true on the show, ties into his past while simultaneously hinting at his future.

Naturally, it was a well-placed flash forward during Randall's reception speech that spiked the heart rates of fans watching everywhere. This series has done a attractive job of laying that foundation already-and unlike Randall's foray into construction, this work is reliable. Earlier in the episode, there was a beat when we thought he could potentially hook up with Kate's maid of honor Madison (Caitlin Thompson). It's poor Kate we're most anxious about.

Zeile's dedication to keeping her lips sealed is no joke - the show's precious plot points are shrouded in such secrecy, the actors barely know what's in store for their characters.

But all of that is yet to come. "We never find Kate and we have to tell Toby that the wedding's off, and he's so shocked that he has a heart attack and dies", Randall envisions. Yikes, they have to be referring to Beth...or maybe Deja? By the time we pick up the action, she's already signed away her parental rights, and Deja is more sullen and angry than ever. It kind of sucks. They had so much going on in the past two seasons that it was really like a really great hug. Believe us, these are happy tears of anguish. "He's the one that she lost, and I'm the one that she got stuck with", Rebecca tells Miguel. The guy has been the patient spouse of Rebecca (Mandy Moore) for years now, living in the shadow of his own best friend. They were family to him long before they literally became family.

Earlier in the night, we met Beth's cousin Zoe, who grew up as her sister. Finally, future Randall levels with Tess that "It's time to go see her". That should make family gatherings interesting. It's confirmed though when Kate confesses to Rebecca on her wedding day that she's been "having dreams" of what "it was supposed to be" for them. Why are you going to Vietnam, Kevin? The first steps were made tonight, but there is much work yet to be done to help Deja process her emotions. By the time both parties were clearly on board to proceed with the wedding, the heartbreaking possibility of their nuptials falling apart made it all the more meaningful. When she laid it out for her mother that she is trying to emulate her as a singer, and aspires to be like her as a mother and wife, we finally saw the divide in their relationship.

The moment we've waited for since Toby proposed to Kate is here.

We see that Toby has sunken into a depression and Kate is attending to him while he is in bed. She put the blame on Toby for not packing it, but come on Kate, that should be your responsibility. A lot of fans guessed that "Old Jack" would be showing up as part of Kate's dream, but the general assumption was that he'd be walking her down the aisle. After Toby's parents mistake Deja for one of the Pearsons' biological kids, she goes outside and smashes the windshield of Randall's Mercedes-Benz with a bat. That's partly because Kevin spent most of the non-exhaling portion of it talking about his recovery from addiction, but also because the moment seemed created to serve a larger goal: to signal to the This Is Us audience that this period of the series, which has been so focused on continuing to grapple with the impact of Jack Pearson's death, is about to embark on a new chapter. This should promise a lighter and brighter future for her, as she fully commits herself to the new love of her life, the man her father said would be better than him.
